SUMMARY:Hoover 150: A Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum is excited to commemorate the 150th birthdays of both Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover with a special new temporary exhibit: “Hoover 150: A Birthday Celebration.” This exhibit will serve as the final temporary exhibit at the Museum prior to the Museum’s complete remodel and renovation. \nStarting May 18\, visitors will discover the lives of the Hoovers in a completely new way\, highlighting their birthdays over the years and the celebrations in their honor. While both Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover lived private personal lives\, items on display will offer a unique perspective on some of their most intimate moments with friends and family. From childhood to adulthood\, experience these great memories through many items in the Hoover Museum collection never seen before. \nGiven the sesquicentennial birthdays of both Bert and Lou\, staff and leaders with the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are excited to showcase an exhibit created\, designed\, and presented entirely in-house. \n“We hope visitors join in the celebration of these special anniversaries and realize the importance the Hoovers’ placed in acknowledging others\, savoring fleeting moments\, and delighting in life’s wonders\,” said Melanie Wier\, assistant curator at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. \n“This is an opportunity to discover the Hoovers in a remarkable way\,” said Thomas Schwartz\, director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. “This exhibit properly provides a special sendoff to our galleries\, sharing the Hoover story in a festive way. With a monumental renovation only months away\, we encourage visitors to rediscover the museum one more time before our doors close until 2026.”

SUMMARY:Night Sky Wonders
DESCRIPTION:Experience the nighttime in the park by joining the Herbert Hoover NHS staff along with the Cedar County naturalist\, Sarah Subbert\, for a night sky program along the historic core near the park loop road on Saturday\, April 20th. Meet in the visitor center theater at 110 Parkside Dr. in West Branch at 8pm. The program will begin in the theater for approximately 30 minutes. We will then gather outside for about one hour. The event is free and open to all ages. This will be an evening exploration to give participants a feel for what goes on in nature during the night.\n\nHikers may hear coyotes howling\, owls hooting\, or rabbits hopping around in the grass. It will be in the waxing gibbous moon phase and\, if the night is clear\, it will cast pools of dappled moonglow through the trees\, grass\, and the constellations through the sky. Folklore and other stories may be shared during the night walk. A telescope along with some astrophotography will also be provided during the program.\n\nParticipants should bring a small flashlight or headlamp and dress for the weather. Red lenses on flashlights are strongly encouraged. Red cellophane will be provided with rubber bands to cover regular flashlights\, if needed. Hope to see you all there! Program may be canceled due to inclement weather.

SUMMARY:New Temporary Exhibit- Thrift Style
DESCRIPTION:‘Thrift Style” opens Oct. 21 through April 30 in the Quarton Gallery. \nThrift Style explores the reuse of feed sacks to make clothing and other household objects and illuminates how the “upcycling” of these bags mutually benefited twentieth-century consumers and businesses. With 41 works from patterns to garments\, it serves as an example of past ingenuity that can inform today’s efforts towards sustainability. \nThe exhibition\, organized by the Historic Costume and Textile Museum and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art\, both at Kansas State University\, provides a nostalgic view into American ingenuity\, sensibility\, and optimism during a particularly challenging time of economic hardship and war—the period of the Great Depression and World War II. The reuse of feed\, flour\, and sugar sacks was a cost-saving and resource-saving approach employed by homemakers to make new items to meet their families’ needs. \nThrift Style is organized by ExhibitsUSA\, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance. \nThe exhibit will be on display from October 21\, 2023 to April 30\, 2024 in the temporary galleries of the Hoover Presidential Museum.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday - From Belgian Babies to UNICEF...
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 21\, 2023\n6 to 7 p.m.\n \nFrom Belgian Babies to UNICEF: The First World War\, Children\, and the Right to Food \nThe Belgian feeding programs developed under Herbert Hoover’s leadership during World War I made an indelible impression not only in postwar Belgium\, but in the United States and in international aid organizations in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Commission for Relief in Belgium and its successor programs created an argument both for the right to food and for the importance of children’s health and welfare that has persevered. This short talk will examine the innovations of the CRB and its impact even in our contemporary world. \n  \nRegister HERE for this free program! \nAbout the Speaker: Tammy M. Proctor is Distinguished Professor of History at Utah State University. Proctor earned her PhD in history from Rutgers University in 1995 and is a specialist in modern European and gender history with a special emphasis on the history of youth\, gender\, and conflict. Best known for her books\, Female Intelligence: Women and Espionage in the First World War (2003) and Civilians in a World at War\, 1914-1918 (2010)\, she is also an expert in the history of international Girl Scouting as well as Boy Scout and Girl Guide history in Britain. More recently\, she has published World War I: A Short History (2017) as well as Gender and the Great War (with Susan Grayzel) and An English Governess in the Great War: The Secret Brussels Diary of Mary Thorp (with Sophie de Schaepdriver). Her book\, Saving Europe\, on the history of US relief in Europe during and after the First World War is forthcoming in 2024 from Oxford University Press. \n

SUMMARY:Third Thursday - Spotlight on the Famous Flour Sacks
DESCRIPTION:August 17\, 2023\n6 to 7 p.m.\n \n“Spotlight on the Famous Flour Sacks”\n \nThis is the 3rd of 3 summertime ‘Best Of ‘ programs. It originally aired in December of 2022 and had one of the highest registrations of all 3rd Thursday programs. \nThe Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum’s entire collection of decorated Belgian Relief flour sacks from World War I was subjected to a close examination in June 2022. Annelien van Kempen\, visiting researcher from The Netherlands\, and Marcus Eckhardt\, Hoover Presidential Museum curator\, studied every detail and counted 360 items in this unique survey of war-time American and Canadian flour sacks\, decorated by Belgian schoolgirls\, women and artists\, mainly in 1915. \nThey will present what they discovered in their fascinating two-week search in this episode. They share their insights in both the great variety and similarity in sacks\, school-projects\, flour residues in dresses\, patriotic patterns in the embroidery and needlework and delicate lace edges. \nThey’ll reveal the identity of Belgian schoolgirls who painted and embroidered the sacks. Special attention will be given to paintings of emerging -now famous- Belgian artists and exquisite embroideries\, including the “Rooster on the Oak Branch” flour sack from Antwerp that was presented in a manifestation of gratitude to Mr. Herbert Hoover in August 1916. Since June\, new WWI decorated flour sacks have come into the museum’s collection\, showing there are many more waiting to be discovered!
