SUMMARY:Hoover Forum: Presidents Learning about Presidents
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 24\, 2021 \n\n1 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom\, Coralville \nJoin us as three speakers examine and share stories of the presidential visits\, including First Ladies\, to the Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. \nThis event is free and a RSVP is requested. The panel discussion will take place at 1 p.m. and is expected to last up to 120 minutes. The panel includes Richard Norton Smith\, Dwight Miller and Tim Walch. \nRichard Norton Smith is a nationally acclaimed presidential historian and biographer.  He served as director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum from 1988 to 1993 and then as director for the Eisenhower\, Reagan and Ford libraries until 2001. He was also the founding director for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.  Author of six books\, he is currently completing a biography of Gerald R. Ford. \nDwight Miller is a historian and archivist who began his career as assistant archivist\, Manuscripts Division at the Library of Congress.  In 1964\, he was selected by President Hoover to serve as senior archivist at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library.  Among his many achievements in processing and creating finding aids for the collections\, Miller also was part of the team that edited the Presidential Papers series for Herbert Hoover (6 vols.) and served as editor for two other books. \nTim Walch began his career with the National Archives and Records Administration in 1979\, holding various positions in Washington\, DC until his appointment as assistant director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in 1988.  He replaced Richard Norton Smith as director in 1993 and served until his retirement in 2011.  Walch is author or editor of two dozen books\, the most recent being Iowa Irish (2019). \nThe discussion will be moderated by Dr. Thomas Schwartz\, Director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum. \nThis is a free event but space is limited. \nreserve your space here

DESCRIPTION:Oct. 23\, 2021 \n\n10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\n \nThe West Branch Lions Club and the Hoover Presidential Foundation are once again sponsoring the Hoover Hunger Project with a goal of making 100\,000 meals for people in need. The event will be on Saturday\, Oct. 23\, 2021 and honors the memory of the U.S.A.’s only Iowa-born President\, Herbert Hoover\, who was known as the Great Humanitarian and ‘feeder of the world.’ \nThe project is a meal packaging event using materials and ingredients from the Meals of Hope organization. We first held this event in 2014 to coincide with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of President Hoover’s state funeral burial at the West Branch gravesite. \nWith generous gifts from people like you\, 84\,000 meals were donated to local and international food banks. Your support will help create 100\,000 meals at a cost of 29 cents each.  The West Branch Lions have donated the first $5\,000\, so we still need about $23\,000 to reach this ambitious goal. By working together\, gifts from private businesses\, individuals and local organizations will combine to accomplish this goal and put food in hungry stomachs. Your gifts will matter! \nAnother way you could help is by volunteering to assist in packaging the meals on Saturday\, Oct. 23 during one of two shifts (10 a.m. to noon and noon to 2 p.m.). Your time is greatly appreciated and you’re welcome to bring your friends\, neighbors and family to work as a team. The West Branch Community Schools have donated the use of the Hoover Elementary gym for this event. The Hoover Presidential Foundation is bringing to Iowa five performances of First Lady Lou\, a one woman show in two acts.  “Lou” takes the audience on the remarkable journey of her life\, played by Oregon actress Jane Fellows. \nSet in a New York City hotel room\, Act I takes place in 1914\, the day before Lou sails to London to join Herbert. Act II takes place in 1944 at the end of her life. In both cases\, Lou Henry Hoover is speaking to a person whom the audience does not see and as she reminisces about her life\, the audience experiences history through the eyes of a smart\, compassionate and visionary woman. \nSupport for these performances was provided through generous gifts from CRST International\, Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, The National Society of The Colonial Dames in The State of Iowa\, Royal Neighbors of America\, and the United Fire Group Foundation. \nThe performance is approximately 90 minutes total including a short intermission. DESCRIPTION:July 15\, 2021\nTime: Noon\, with rebroadcast of recorded program at 6 p.m.\nZoom Webinar \nSpeaker: Dr. Mary Elisabeth Cox\n \n“Nutritional Inequality in Vienna: 1919 to 1922” \nProgram Description: As the Austro-Hungarian Empire began to unravel during the First World War\, the specter of civilian hunger grew in Vienna. Food insecurity increased in the city for a variety of interconnected reasons. In the midst of wide-spread food shortages\, the University of Vienna’s Children’s Clinic and Hospital became inundated with new patients suffering from a variety of ailments associated with malnutrition. Unfortunately\, hunger did not immediately cease with the succession of hostilities. One contemporary study suggested that in 1919\, 90% all school children in the city were experiencing moderate to severe malnutrition. This presentation explores the impact that reduced food supplies due the First World War and Franco-British blockade had on the health of civilians in Vienna\, as well as the nutritional impact on the city once the blockade was lifted and international food aid arrived. The advertising textbook discussed the advent of mass marketing\, and mentioned that a very attractive first lady’s image was used\, without her permission\, to market a wide variety of products.” \n“That first lady was Frances Folsom Cleveland. I did a little background reading\, and learned that she was our nation’s youngest first lady\, that her wedding took place in the White House\, and that there was a 27 year age difference between her and her husband\, Grover Cleveland. Such is the stuff of novels\, but as is often the case\, the facts may be more believable than if an author had used the same characters in a work of fiction.”

It was originally dedicated in 1962. The Library & Museum has been expanded three times since then – the last in 1992 when Ronald Reagan came and rededicated the Library & Museum. \nIt is still the smallest (by far) of the 13 NARA Presidential Libraries and Museums. But as Herbert Hoover said\, if his library is anything like the federal government\, it will grow larger over time. \nIt did grow during its first 30 years of existence. In 1992 the library was transformed and visitation reached record levels. Many Iowans and Americans learned and were inspired by the Hoover story in a modern way. It will explore how Lincoln attempted to inform public opinion regarding the natural rights of black Americans by reclaiming the central idea of the American regime—namely\, human equality. Lincoln’s efforts to re-establish equality as the lodestar of the nation’s political practice will be contrasted with the policy of “popular sovereignty” as it was promoted by his long-time rival Sen. Stephen A. Douglas\, the leading Democrat and therefore the leading American politician of the 1850s. \nOther alternatives\, like the radical abolitionism of William Lloyd Garrison and the pro-slavery thinking of Alexander H. SUMMARY:Third Thursday - The 1929 Christmas Eve White House Fire
DESCRIPTION:6 to 7 p.m. Zoom Webinar \nSpeaker: Craig Wright\, Archivist\, Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum\n \nSmoke was noticed by a White House telephone operator who sounded the alarm.  The fire was thought to be contained when the first engines arrived.  But flames suddenly appeared in areas outside of the fire zone.  In the end\, it became a four-alarm fire with dozens of engines and ladder companies working to extinguish the inferno.  Although most of President Hoover’s important papers were saved\, the Executive offices were destroyed.  A number of miscellaneous documents littered the White House lawn in the aftermath. \nDespite the commotion\, Mrs. Hoover continued a party for the children of their good friends in the main portion of the White House which was unaffected by the fire. \nRegistration is now open. She very proudly saved the resulting clipping with a note\, “first thing I ever had published.” This program imagines Laura thinking back not only just about this current trip\, but over her life as she sits down to write that famous summary of her trip\, the diary from which would eventually be published in an edited version as On the Way Home. \nRegistration is now open. SUMMARY:The Invisible Guest Banquet
DESCRIPTION:The Invisible Guest Banquet \n \nAs you can imagine\, the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to many scheduled programs this year. Unfortunately\, we’ve had to cancel our annual Celebration Banquet as well- our largest\, most prestigious fundraiser of the year. So we’re looking for ways to creatively reduce that loss and still deliver a Hoover message. And we didn’t have to look far- because Herbert Hoover himself set the example in 1920 with a series of Invisible Guest Banquets. \nAt the end of WWI\, Congress appropriated $100 million and created the American Relief Administration\, naming Herbert Hoover to head the effort. When the money ran out\, Hoover knew the work was not done and there were more people to feed\, so he asked President Wilson to allow him to continue using the ARA name as a private organization and he would raise the funding needed himself. To do that\, he created the Invisible Guest dinners. Guests would buy their tickets plus one extra ticket for the invisible guest – which was really an empty chair with a candle on it\, representing those who were in need of food. \n“Americans spend more than one billion dollars on automobiles\, on ice cream\, tobacco\, gum and cosmetics\,” Hoover said in 1920. “Surely we can reduce this spending to feed a child.” At $1000 a plate\, the guests were served the same relief food used in Europe. He was able to quickly reach his goal of $30 million within a year. But we’re not actually having a dinner\, and we’re not asking for $1000 a plate. \nWe’re asking anyone who’s ever been to one of our banquets or people who wish to support the Hoover Presidential Library and National Historic Site\, to purchase an Invisible Guest Banquet ticket for themselves and one for the invisible guest\, at $150 each. If they do\, we have a limited edition Hoover signature tie or a ladies scarf patterned after one of Lou Henry Hoover’s dresses for them. If they purchase a pair of tickets and one for the invisible guest\, we’ll send a scarf AND a tie as our thank you for their support. \nBy making your gift through our convenient online portal\, you’re helping share Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover’s life and legacy with a generation who has not heard his incredible story!
